Flyers top Devils 2-1, Pronger returns

September 30, 2011

Jaromir Jagr continues his success in his return to the NHL. Last night he scored the game winning goal with 12:48 left in the third period to beat New Jersey 2-1.

The newly deemed captain Chris Pronger, made his return to the ice last night after recovering from wrist and back surgeries during the off-season. Pronger got an assist and even a roughing minor last night.

Both general manger Paul Holmgrem and head coach Peter Laviolette are confident that Pronger will play in the season opener Thursday night against Boston.

Wayne Simmonds scored in the second period (12:19) on the power play to put the Flyers up 1-0.

Center Stephane Veilleux scored New Jersey's only goal, which was earned 14 seconds in to the second period.

Martin Brodeur made 25 saves for the Devils last night. Ilya Bryzgalov made 17 saves last night for Philadelphia, then was substituted for Sergei Bobrovsky in the second.

The Flyers will head to New Jersey to play the Devils Saturday night for their final preseason game.

Recap links coming soon.

Simmonds won't be disciplined for slur

September 28, 2011

Forward Wayne Simmonds will not be punished in anyway by the NHL, for allegedly yelling a  homophobic slur at Ranger's forward Sean Avery.

The NHL met with Simmonds yesterday to discuss the matter.

After review, they couldn't find any conclusive evidence that Simmonds directed a homophobic slur at Avery.

The NHL does have the right to revisit the incident should new evidence arise.

Testwuide could face suspension

September 24, 2011

Last night in the Flyer's 3-1 win over the Detroit Red Wings, the Flyer's Mike Testwuide hit Detroit's Brendan Smith from behind in to the boards.

The hit occured halfway through the first period. After the puck was dumped in to Detroit's zone, Smith went over to get the puck in the corner, while Testwuide came flying down the ice.

At the last second, Smith turned his around, facing the boards. At that point, Testwuide couldn't stop, and checked Smith face first in to the boards.

Testwuide received a five minute major for the hit. He also received a game misconduct and was ejected from the game.

Now, Testwuide and the Flyers are waiting to see if he will be suspended, for the NHL's new "Czar of Discipline" Mike Shannahan has zero tolerance for blind hits and head shots.

Shannahan already handed a 10 game suspension to Jody Shelley, for a hit similar to Testwuide's. Shelley hit Toronto's Darryl Boyce from behind, recieving a five minute boarding major, a game misconduct during Wednesday night's game against the Maple Leafs. Shelley was suspended by the NHL the next day.

I will keep you updated on Testwuide's status, as soon as more details emerge.

Flyers win in Motown 3-1, Jagr scores in debut

September 24, 2011

After a shootout loss the night before in London, Ontario, the Flyers bounced back in Detroit to beat the Red Wings 3-1.

Detroit's left winger Fabian Brunnstrom (1) scored in the first period to put the Red Wings on the board 1-0 early.

With 2:34 left in the first, James Van Riemsdyk (3) scored to tie the game 1-1.

52 seconds later (1:42 left in the first period) Jaromir Jagr (1), making his pre-season debut as a Flyer, scored to give Philadelphia a 2-1 lead. Jagr also had an assist on the night.

The Flyers would not let go of the lead thanks to great goaltending from Sergei Bobrovsky, who made 23 saves last night.

In the second period with 10:41 remaining, center Matt Read (1) scored an unassisted goal to give the Flyers a 3-1 lead.

Detroit's goaltender Jimmy Howard saved 19 shots, but it wasn't enough to stop Philadelphia. The Flyers won by a final of 3-1.

The Flyers come home to the Wells Fargo Center Monday night for their next pre-season game against the New York Rangers. Puck drops at 7:00 PM.

NHL Commmisioner addresses banana thrown at Simmonds

September 23, 2011

Wayne Simmonds fell victim to something that has never been seen before in hockey.

Last night's game in London, Ontario, (which ended in a 4-3 loss) in the shootout, Simmonds went to take his shot. As he skated down the ice, someone in the stands threw a banana at him.

Simmonds acknowledged that what had just happened to him did startle him a bit, but he still managed to score.

NHL Commisioner Gary Bettman adressed what was generally viwed as a racial slur.

"We have millions of great fans who show tremendous respect for our players and for the game," said Bettman . "The obviously stupid and ignorant action by one individual is in no way representative of our fans or the people of London, Ontario."

Hyka ineligible for NHL this year

September 23, 2011

Left-winger Tomas Hyka's (18) training amp with the Flyers came to an abrupt end.

Hyka is heading back to Gatineau to play for his former junior team.

Due to rules in the NHL's collective bargaining agreement, Hyka is not an  unrestricted free agent and can not be signed by any NHL team this year. He will, however, be eligible for next year's draft.

This unfortunate considering that Hyka has played well for the Flyers so far in the pre-season.

The Flyers preseason game vs the Red Wings starts tonight at 7:30 PM.

Flyers lose in shootout

September 23, 2011

The Flyers lost to the Detroit Red Wings 4-3 in a shootout last night. Wayne Simonds scored in the third period to tie up the game which led to overtime for the exhibition game in London, Ontario.

In the shootout, Simmonds went in to take his shot when someone in the seats threw a banana at him.

September 22, 2011

Tomas Hyka and Erik Gustafsson scored the Flyer's only two goals last night.

Both teams showed tension between each other last night. Jody Shelley hit the Maple Leaf's Darryl Boyce from behind in to the boards. Shelley received a five minute major for boarding.

Coturier signed to entry level contract

September 21, 2011

The Flyers signed rookie center Sean Couturier to an entry level contract.

Couturier was selected in the first round by the Flyers in this year's NHL Draft. He was the eighth overall pick. The Flyers aquired the draft pick from the Columbus Blue Jackets along with Jakub Voracek in exchange for Jeff Carter.

Flyers open up pre-season with 4-0 win vs Leafs

September 21, 2011

It's only pre-season, but it was nice to see the Flyers open up with a shutout win in Toronto. Especially when many of the young players played well.

Goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky saved all 27 shots that came his way to get his first ever NHL shutout, and he did it on his 23rd birthday (pretty good present).

Center Zac Rinaldo, right winger Wayne Simmonds (who came from Los Angeles in the Mike Richards trade), and right winger Mike Testwuide scored the Flyers first three goals respectively.

Then in the third period, the eighth overall pick in this year's NHL Draft, center Sean Couturier scored his first NHL goal and the Flyers fourth and final goal of the game.

Defenseman Matt Carle had two assists on the night.

Jakub Voracek (came from Cloumbus in the Carter trade) played well last night as well. Voracek earned an assist in the second period when he set up a pass to Rinaldo, who went on to score the Flyer's first goal of the night.

The Flyers will be at home tonight to play the Maple Leafs again, this time at the Wells Fargo Center.

For those of you that are not familiar, you can check out That Phillies Blog at http://thatphilliesblog.blogspot.com/. Much like this blog, you can catch up on the Phillies and stay in the know, especially since October is rapidly approaching. It can also give you a good idea of how I'll be running this blog. I promise to update this blog when a story presents itself as soon as possible. However, there are a few things you should know. One, I am a senior in high school, some stories may not go up as they happen simply because, I'm in school, I have to wait to get home. Also, I have homework and college stuff to get done, so I have to put that first. Second, I have a job, so that keeps me away as well. But like I said, I will do everything I can to keep this blog up to date. We are rapidly approaching the start of a new NHL season, I felt that now was the perfect time to open the blog. I truly hope you enjoy That Flyers Blog. I don't do this for any money or any sort of payment for that matter. This blog is just a labor of love from a life-long fan.
