Important Notice
December 12, 2011
Hello everyone,
Christmas is rapidly approaching, and because of that, unfortunately, my school work is piling up before break. I would like to apologize now, as I will not be able to fully update the blog over the next few weeks. I have a very big research paper that I have to work on in my english class, and that has been calling for a lot of my attention. Although I will not be writing in the blog, I will post links to all the lastest news and reports. So, you still have something there. Expect this to last for a couple weeks; the paper is due in early January. Again, I am very sorry and I apologize for any inconvience.
Happy Holidays!

Another late addition to the alumni game
December 9, 2011
The roster for the Winter Classic alumni game is loaded with hall of famers and past fan favorites from the Rangers and the Flyers.
However, there were a few big names missing from the roster, particularly one on the Ranger's side. Mark Messier.
Messier originally was not on the roster, but now CSNPhilly.com is reporting that he will play for the Rangers alumni.
Messier originally declined because he was scheduled to have shoulder surgery, but he will not have it now until after the game.
Compared to the Flyer's alumni roster, it does make the Ranger's look a little better.

Captain Pronger out indefinitely
December 9, 2011
So now the virus has become "concussion-like symptoms" based on the words of Flyer's GM Paul Holmgren.
Chris Pronger, who has missed the last nine games with a virus and opting to have knee surgery, is now out indefinitely with concussion-like symptoms.
In fact, Holmgren, or anyone else in the organization for that matter, still has no idea what is wrong with Pronger.
"We got [Pronger] checked out (for a concussion) before our next game, which he missed," Holmgren explained to CSNPhilly.com, along with the other local media . "And then the dominoes started to fall with his knee and with what we said was a virus because we weren’t sure what we were dealing with. "
“It’s just been the last two or three days where he has had a fairly persistent headache and sluggish feeling. We are trying to do the right thing and get him checked out by the doctors in Pittsburgh and see what we’re dealing with."
Hopefully, the nature of Pronger's symptoms will become way more clearer after he is checked by doctors in Pittsburgh.
However, the Flyers have actually been playing pretty well during Pronger's absence. Kimmo Timmonen, Braydon Coburn, Matt Carle, and Andrej Meszaros have holding up just fine on defense, and rookies Marc-Andre Bourdon and Kevin Marshall have played well on defense also.
Also, Ilya Bryzgalov is getting noticeably more comfortable in goal for the Flyers, and the offense continues to find ways to put points on the board.
Hopefully they can keep it up, but you would still like to have your captain in the lineup regardless.
Schenn also out with concussion
Though the news concerning Pronger was considerably of higher interest, Holmgren also addressed forward Brayden Schenn's situation.
Schenn has missed the last two games with a reported upper-body injury, and now Holmgren announced that Schenn will be inactive throughout the weekend.
It was then reported on the Flyer's website that Schenn is believed to have a mild concussion, and will be out indefinitely.
Schenn has been struggling to stay in the Flyer's lineup for much of the season so far. First with a shoulder injury that prevented him from starting the season with the Flyers, then a broken foot that sidelined him for a few more weeks. Now his concussion will force him to sit out again.

Bryz stops Pens rally, Flyers win fourth straight
December 9, 2011
The Flyers returned to the Wells Fargo Center on a three game win streak Thursday night.
They were, and still are, without their captain Chris Pronger, while the Penguins were also without their captain Sidney Crosby, who sat out as a concussion related precaution. As for Pronger, still know one knows what is going on with him.
So the two rivals, playing each other for the first time this season, faced-off without their captains. And for Maxime Talbot, it was his first time playing the Penguins, since coming over to Philadelphia.
Danny Briere scored (8, 6:38) to give the Flyers a 1-0 lead in the first period. He scored the only goal of the period.
In the second, Wayne Simmonds scored a power play goal (6, 8:42), followed by a one-timer goal by Scott Hartnell (13, 13:32) from Andrej Meszaros, that gave the Flyers a three goal lead.
James Neal scored on the power play for Pittsburgh (15, 14:10) to make the score 3-1 heading into the third.
Then the Penguins started putting the pressure on.
Evgeni Malkin scored (10, 8:21) to to cut the Flyer's lead down to just one.
But Ilya Bryzgalov was able to keep the Penguins out of the net for the remainder of the period.
Bryzgalov made 25 saves on the night, while the opposing goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury made 26.
The Flyers won 3-2, and took control of first place in the Atlantic Division and the Eastern Conference in the process.
With a 17-7-3 record and 37 points, the Flyers have a two point lead over Pittsburgh in the Atlantic Division, and have a one point lead over the Florida Panthers in the conference.
After playing their second game in as many nights, the Flyers will have an off night before playing the Tampa Bay Lightning, Saturday night at the Wells Fargo Center.

Giroux, Flyers beat Sabres 5-4 in OT
December 8, 2011
The Flyers went into Buffalo with a two game win streak Wednesday night, but the Sabres looked like they were going to end that streak in the First Niagara Center.
Former Flyer Ville Leino (3, 10:16), Zack Kassian (3, 18:55), and Thomas Vanek (13, 19:37), all scored in the first period, to put the Flyers in a 3-0 hole.
With one second left in the first, Max Talbot found the net (7, 19:59), cutting the deficit two.
The second period was all Flyers.
Matt Read (11, 5:17), Scott Hartnell (12, 14:45), and Jaromir Jagr (9, 17:48), each scored to give the Flyers a total of four unanswered goals over the first two periods, and giving Philadelphia a 4-3 lead.
The Sabres would tie it up though, as Drew Stafford scored late for the only goal in the third period (5, 18:25).
So, we head to overtime.
Claude Giroux was having an incredible night already, recording an assist on all three of the Flyer's goals in the second period. Giroux's assists gave him a total of 36 points, tying him with Toronto's Phil Kessel for the lead in season points.
Then, in overtime, this happened.
NHLVids247
Giroux intercepted a pass from Buffalo defenseman Marc-Andre Gragnani, then broke out on the break away.
By the time Giroux got into Buffalo's zone, goaltender Ryan Miller stood no chance. Giroux scored the game winner to become the NHL's points leader, and giving the Flyer's a 5-4 overtime win over Buffalo.
Ryan Miller faced 34 Philadelphia shots, saving 29 of them.
Ilya Bryzgalov had another rough start, allowing three early goals, but settled down as the game moved on. He made 20 saves out of a total of 24 shots.
The Flyers move back up to second place in the Atlantic Division, after falling into third behind the New York Rangers.
The Pittsburgh Penguins are in first place, and the Flyers will have the oppurtunity to gain some ground on their interstate rival when the Penguins come to town Thursday night.
Extra Notes
From NHL.com
"Buffalo's Ville Leino will face a hearing with the Department of Player Safety on Thursday afternoon.
Leino's hearing is in regard to the elbow he delivered to the head of Philadelphia's Matt Read in Wednesday night's game, a 5-4 overtime win by the Flyers."

Update: JVR back, Schenn out, no Crosby, alumni game
December 7, 2011
Van Riemsdyk returns to the lineup
CSNPhilly.com's Tim Panaccio is reporting that forward James Van Riemsdyk will be in the lineup tonight in Buffalo, when the Flyers play the Sabres.
Van Riemsdyk has missed the last four games with an upper-body injury, that he says is still affecting his ability to shoot.
Schenn injured again
Panaccio is also reporting that forward Brayden Schenn is day-to-day with an upper-body injury.
Schenn did not make the trip to Buffalo with the team.
Panaccio also wrote about veteran defenseman Kimmo Timmonen and what he has been doing in his workouts, in order to become more durable over the season.
You can read Panaccio's full article at http://www.csnphilly.com/blog/flyers-talk/post/Timonen-working-on-durability-Schenn-out?blockID=607472&feedID=695
Crosby will not play against the Flyers
Thursday night is a big game, as the Flyers will clash with their hated Atlantic Division rival Pittsburgh Penguins at the Wells Fargo Center.
The Penguins will be without their captain, in forward Sidney Crosby.
CSNPhilly.com reports that Crosby did not make the trip to Philadelphia, and will not play in the Penguins next two games.
Crosby has missed a lot of time last year and this year with a concussion, and will sit out as a precaution.
Late goaltender additions to the alumni roster
A couple late additions have been made to the Flyer's alumni roster for the Winter Classic.
The Flyer's two greatest goaltenders, Bernie Parent and Ron Hextall, have been added.
Parent will play in goal for about five or 10 minutes on New Year's eve, but Hextall will not play for health reasons, according to CSNPhilly.com's Sarah Baicker. Instead, Hextall will serve as an ambassador to the team.
No offense to Neil Little and Mark LaForest, but the additions of Hextall and Parent make the alumni roster's goaltending look way better.

Extreme conference realignment coming to NHL
December 6, 2011
When the Atlanta Thrashers became the Winnipeg Jets, it was clear to everyone, including the NHL, that conference re-alignment would be in the near future.
On Monday, the board of governers approved a new re-alignment plan, but it makes way more changes than most expected.
There will no longer be an Eastern and Western Conference. Instead, there will be four conferences that are divided up geographically.
The conferences are as followed:
Conference A
- Anaheim Ducks
- Calgary Flames
- Los Angeles Kings
- Phoenix Coyotes
- San Jose Sharks
- Vancouver Canucks
Conference D
- Carolina Hurricanes
- New Jersey Devils
- New York Islanders
- New York Rangers
- Philadelphia Flyers
- Pittsburgh Penguins
- Washington Capitals
The conferences are still to be named, but will be initiated for the 2012-2013 season.
The realignment allows for every team to play each other twice at home and on the road. In addition, teams within the conferences will play each other six times a year; each team getting three games at home and three on the road.
The playoffs also got an overhaul as a result of the realignment.
The top four teams in each conference will make the playoffs, where the top seeds will play the fourth seeds in each conference, and the second seeds will play the third seeds.
The four conference champions will then play in a final four format, then the last two teams will play in the Stanley Cup Finals.
The new alignment is an extreme change for the NHL, but according to commisoner Gary Bettman, the goal was to create a more efficient and balanced schedule for teams.

Bryz returns to Phoenix, Flyers score 4 in 1st
December 5, 2011
Ilya Bryzgalov made his first return to Phoenix Saturday night, since signing with the Flyers.
The Flyers entered the game as the highest scoring team in the NHL, and they backed it up.
Matt Read (10, 4:23), Wayne Simmonds (5, 6:01), Claude Giroux (15, 16:13), and Scott Hartnell (11, 18:29) all scored in the first period, to give the Flyers a 4-0 cushion.
Phoenix's Ray Whitney scored in the second (9, 7:15) and Mikkel Boedker scored in the third (5, 19:19) to cut the Flyer's lead to two.
But Ilya Bryzgalov was able to stop 36 of his former team's 38 shots, to give the Flyers the 4-2 win.
Mike Smith was pulled by the Coyotes after a forgettable first period, where he only stopped 13 of 17 shots.
Jason Labarbera took goal for Phoenix in the last two periods and stopped all 13 shots he saw from the Flyers.
The Flyers will return to the east coast to continue their road trip. They will be in Buffalo Wednesday night to play the Sabres.

Jagr scores two, Flyers win in OT
December 3, 2011
Jaromir Jagr and Brayden Schenn were back in the lineup Friday night, just in time for Bruce Boudreau to make his debut as head coach for the Anaheim Ducks.
Things looked to be going well in Boudreau's debut, as the Ducks were able to score three against former Duck Ilya Bryzgalov (who has not started in goal for the Flyers since November 23 against the Islanders).
Andrew Cogliano (6, 8:12) and Teemu Selanne (9, 10:34) scored in the first period to give Anaheim a 2-0 lead. Then Andrew Gordon scored his first of the year, in the second (6:31), to make it 3-0 Anaheim.
Going into Friday night, the Flyers had four days off since playing their last game against the Rangers on Sunday.
The rust was showing from the Flyer's down time, but late in the second, Jagr was able to snap them out of it.
Jagr scored a power play goal (7, 15:18) by a deflection, off a shot from Kimmo Timmonen, to make it a 3-1 game.
In the third period, Jagr scored again (8, 4:46) off a slapshot that blew right past Jonas Hiller, to make it 3-2. Jagr recorded an assist later on, to go along with his two goals, finishing with three points on the night.
Later in the period, Kimmo Timmonen set Scott Hartnell up with a one-time pass from behind the net. Hartnell scored (10, 16:58) to tie the game up 3-3.
Kimmo Timmonen had an excellent night, recording three assists.
The third period ended in a tie, so the teams were headed to overtime.
Claude Giroux continued his great season by scoring the game winner (14, 3:29), giving the Flyers the 4-3 overtime win, and spoiling Boudreau's Ducks debut.
Jonas Hiller performed well in net for the first half of the game, but it all fell apart in the latter half.
Hiller saw a staggering 47 shots, making 43 saves.
Ilya Bryzgalov, unlike Hiller, had a rough first half, but recovered in the second half of the game. He also saw only 22 shots, not even half of the shots Hiller took.
Bryzgalov made 19 saves.
The Flyers are now 14-7-3, with 31 points on the season. That currently puts them in fifth place in the Eastern Conference standings.
Phoenix will be the Flyers next destination on their west coast road trip. They will face Bryzgalov's other former team, the Phoenix Coyotes, on Saturday for their second game in as many days.
Extra Notes
Jaromir Jagr is two goals shy of tying Brendan Shannahan for 11th place on the career goals list. Shannahan has 656, Jagr, with his two goals against Anaheim, has 654.
Defenseman Matt Walker cleared waivers and was recalled from the Phantoms, but was scratched from the lineup Friday night.

Flyers, Ducks headlines
December 2, 2011
The Flyers have had almost a week off, but now they will get back on the ice tonight in Anaheim, to play the Ducks.
Both teams have created some big news over the past few days, so why don't we take a look.
Pronger's virus lingering

Chris Pronger will miss at least 12 games after undergoing knee surgery, but that isn't the cause for concern.
Prior to the surgery decision, Pronger missed four games due to a virus that was never really explained. Now it is being reported that the symptoms from this mysterious virus are still lingering.
Pronger says that he "never felt like this before," and has no idea what is going on.
The Flyer's captain has been going through cases of nausea, lightheadediness, and headaches. He took a concussion pass, but he passed it.
Pronger said, on Tuesday, that he "Did some blood work and we’re trying to get to the bottom of what is going on."
Pronger's surgery was to remove some loose bodies from his knee, he began rehabbing on Friday.
Walker in lineup tonight
Defenseman Matt Walker cleared waivers, which was expected, and will be in the Flyer's lineup tonight against Anaheim.
Off time sends Flyers back in the standings
The Flyers time off has sent them back in the Eastern Conference standings. They are currently in 6th place behind Toronto, New York (Rangers), Florida, Boston, and Pittsburgh respectively.
The Flyers are third in the Atlantic Division behind New York (Rangers), and Pittsburgh heading into tonight's game.
Expected returns
Brayden Schenn looks ready to return to the lineup after being out with a broken foot.
Jaromir Jagr is a game time decision for tonight's game, he has missed time with a groin pull.
Ilya Bryzgalov is expected to start in goal either tonight against Anaheim, or tomorrow against Phoenix. Sergei Bobrovsky started the Flyer's last two games against the Islanders and Rangers.
Boudreau makes debut
After being fired by the Washington Capitals, head coach Bruce Boudreau was quickly hired to coach the struggling Anaheim Ducks.
The Ducks fired their seven year head coach Randy Carlyle wednesday night, after a 4-1 win over the Montreal Canadiens.
The Ducks are currently 7-13-4 and are 14th in the Western Conference with a lowly 18 points.
So far, Boudreau has been given a warm welcome by the team.
