Pens' Asham, Neal suspended

April 18, 2012

The Flyers have some good news going into game four.

The Penguins will be without Arron Asham, but more importantly, they will be without James Neal.

NHL Disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan announced Tuesday night that Asham will be suspended for four games, and Neal will be suspended for one game.

Both players will miss game four, and Asham's suspension will carry over into next year's regular season if neccesary.

Asham was suspended for his cheap shot on Brayden Schenn in the Flyers' 8-4 game three win, where Asham cross checked Schenn in the neck, then punched him in the back of the head while he was down in the first period.

Neal was suspended for a hit on Sean Couturier in the third period. Couturier did not have the puck and never saw Neal coming.

Neal was also suspended for trying to hit Claude Giroux in the third period. Neal did not connect, but he left his feet and threw himself towards Giroux, clearly showing his intent to hurt him.

Neal scored 40 goals for Pittsburgh this season, making him a huge loss for the Penguins on the brink of elimination.

Leighton recalled

Tim Panaccio of CSNPhilly.com reports that the Flyers have recalled goaltender Michael Leighton to be the third goalie, but he has to clear re-entry waivers first.

Leighton holds a special place amongst Flyers fans for standing on his head in goal along with Brian Boucher in the Flyers' Stanley Cup run in 2010.

Panaccio also suspects that forward Harry Zolnierczyk and defenseman Brandon Manning will also be recalled from Adirondack now that the Phantoms are out of the AHL Playoffs.
