Canes win 4-2, Flyers lose 2 straight

November 21, 2011

The Flyers went into Monday night's game without two of thier defensemen. Chris Pronger was out with a virus, and Braydon Coburn was out with a kidney bruise that has been classed as an upper-body injury.

On top of that, Jaromir Jagr opted to sit out Monday night's game, as a cautionary measure. He suffered a groin pull last week and wanted to make sure that he was fully recovered, before going back at it.

The Flyers were banged up, and called up defensemen Kevin Marshall and Marc-Andre Bourdon to help fill the openings at defense, while Pronger and Coburn were out.

Both players made their NHL debuts Monday night, and turned in solid performances. Marshall got 14:11 of ice time, and finished the night minus-1, not bad for his first NHL game. Bourdon, however, had 15:49 of ice time, and finished plus-1.

Unfortunately, that was one of the very few bright spots to come out of the Wells Fargo Center, after a 4-2 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes.

“We were flat,” said Kimmo Timmonen. “From the start of the game to the end of the game. It’s hard to tell why but it’s one of those things. It happens even if you don’t want it to happen."

The first period was all Hurricanes.

Alexi Ponikarovsky (4, 13:42) and Jeff Skinner (9, 19:45) both scored to give the Hurricanes a 2-0 lead by the edn of the period. Ponikarovsky's goal came on the power play.

Early in the second, James Van Riemsdyk scored his eighth goal of the season (1:34) to put the Flyers on the board, making it 2-1.

But Chad LaRose answered for Carolina, with his sixth goal of the season (3:37) to make it 3-1.

Matt Read scored (9, 12:24) on the power play, to continue his excellent season, to cut the Canes lead back down to 1.

Alexi Ponikarovsky scored the first goal of the game, and he scored the last on the power play (5, 18:33).

Ponikarovsky's goal was the game winner for Carolina. There was no scoring in the third period.

Ilya Bryzgalov had a rough night, making only 27 saves off 31 shots.

Cam Ward made 30 saves for the Hurricanes off 32 shots.

The Flyers have lost two straight, after a loss to Winnipeg on Saturday, followed by Monday night's loss to Carolina.

Braydon Coburn is only expected to miss one or two games with his injury, according to GM Paul Holmgren. Pronger will have tests run on him, but he is listed as day-to-day.

The Flyers will go on the road to play the New York Islanders on Wednessday night.
