Flyers score nine on Columbus

November 6, 2011

James Van Riemesdyk made his way back into the lineup Saturday night, after missing Thursday night's game against the New Jersey Devils with a minor knee injury.

Meanwhile, Jakub Voracek was looking for a win against his old team, and boy did he get that.

The only missing storyline was Jeff Carter’s return to Philadelphia. Carter was at the Wells Fargo Center Saturday night, but a broken foot would only let him watch as the Flyers crushed the Blue Jackets 9-2.

The Flyers had an incredible first period.

James Van Riemsdyk (6, 1:38), Jaromir Jagr (6, 3:09), Maxime Talbot (5, 13:09), Claude Giroux (9, 14:37), and Jakub Voracek (3, 19:25) all recorded goals to give the Flyers a 5-0 lead by the first intermission.

Voracek played a great game against his former team, recording two assists on top of his goal for a three point night. He fed a nice pass to Talbot, who scored the third goal of the night for Philadelphia, to get an assist. Voracek earned another assist in the third on Sean Couturier’s goal, which was the team’s ninth of the night.

In the second period, Columbus still could not stop the Flyer’s offense.

Sean Couturier (4) scored a shorthanded goal (7:08) to give the Flyers a six goal lead.

Later in the second, Wayne Simmonds scored his third goal of the year to make it 7-0 Philadelphia (15:50).

Then Matt Carle scored his third on a backhander to give the Flyers an 8-0 lead (16:10)

In the third period the Blue Jackets finally made their way on to the scoreboard.

Forward Derek Dorsett made it 8-1 with his second goal of the year (13:13). But Sean Couturier answered back with his second goal (5) of the night, and the ninth for the Flyers, to give them an eight goal lead again.

Blue Jacket’s defenseman Grant Clitsome (1) scored late in the third period to make it 9-2, but it did not make any difference.

The Flyers won 9-2 in a very lopsided matchup.

Steve Mason only made 21 saves in 28 shots for the Blue Jackets. He was pulled in the third after going through a 53:09 nightmare.

Allen York played final 6:51 of the game. His time in net was not much better than Mason’s though, making three save in five shots, and allowing two goals.

Ilya Bryzgolav turned in a solid performance for Philadelphia. He allowed two goals, but made 33 saves out of 35 shots faced.

Bryzgalov will get the win, while Mason gets charged with the loss.

The Flyers will get a few days off, before they head to Tampa Bay to play the Lightning on Wednesday night.
