Pronger to have knee surgery

November 28, 2011

Defenseman Chris Pronger will have knee surgery and is expected to be out for four weeks.

Pronger has been out since November 19 with a virus, but the announcement that Pronger would need surgery was unexpected.

The Flyer's captain is scheduled to have the surgery on Tuesday to remove loose particles from his left knee.

GM Paul Holmgren said that Pronger had been dealing with it up until the virus showed up. Holmgren thought that the down time Pronger had would help is knee settle down, but after some tests, it was decided that surgery was the way to go.

Pronger and fellow defenseman Andreas Lilja (high ankle sprain) will go on the long-term injured reserve.

Defensemen Marc-Andre Bourdon and Kevin Marshall are expected to stay on the Flyers duing Pronger's and Lilja's absence.

Not having Pronger is a huge set back for the Flyers, as they will once again go without their captain (remember the eye injury earlier in the season?). At the same time, James Van Riemsdyk and Jaromir Jagr are still out with injuries.

Van Riemsdyk is out 1-2 weeks with an upper-body injury, and Jagr is day-to-day with a groin injury.

The Flyers will not have a game until Friday, when they played the Ducks in Anaheim, followed by the Coyotes on Saturday in Phoenix.
